Built on the bluffs of Marrowstone Island, Fort Flagler is one of three forts constructed in the late 1800s to defend Puget Sound against a sea invasion at strategic Admiralty Inlet.  In conjunction with Fort Worden on Quimper Peninsula and Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, Fort Flagler created a "Triangle of Fire" that covered access from the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Puget Sound.

Historic buildings remain,

including barracks.

Now a state park,

camping is allowed

on the grounds.

Black tail deer snack

near the barracks.

The deer don't spook

easily.

Western Fisheries Research Center

Marrowstone Marine Station

occupies buildings at the

foot of the bluffs.
