On December 7, 1864 the Union Army descended on Hicksord, now Emporia to destroy the railroad line that supplied the Confederate Army in Petersburg. On December 9, Union troops plundered the area and destroyed sixteen miles of railroad track as they retreated to Petersburg. Because the Union soldiers were said to been drinking Apple Whiskey, locally known as Applejack, while raiding the area, this conflict became known as the Apple Jack Raid.
