Historic Downtown Yuma, Arizona

Since 1849, Main Street has been at the center of activity for Yuma.   Because of repeated flooding, most of buildings in this area date to the 1920s.

These photographs bring back many memories. I graduated from Yuma Union High School 60 years ago in 1960, when The Yuma Criminals were the reigning state champion footballers. Downtown was a bustling thoroughfare. Businesses on 4th Avenue extended to just beyond 24th Street. Kofa High School was the newly added second high school. Tractors pulled wagons loaded with delicious cantaloupes up 16th street past Frontier Drugs en route to the packing sheds downtown. The players from the Yuma Sun Sox of the Class C Arizona-Mexico League had breakfast at the drug store soda fountain about 2 PM before reporting for batting practice at the County Ball Park. They traveled by private auto to places like Phonix, Tucson, and Nogales, AZ, and Mexicali and Cananaya, Mexico. They would get a police escort out of town when they played in Cananaya. Yuma was a great place to grow up.
