Bush was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in 1971.  He was head of the Republican National Committee from 1973 to August, 1974.  He was appointed U.S. Envoy to China by President Gerald Ford in 1975.  In 1976, Bush became Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

President Bush lost his reelection bid in 1992 to William Jefferson Clinton.  George and Barbara Bush returned to private life.  They are busy with family, friends.  President Bush teamed with President Clinton in 2005 to raise more than $100 million dollars for victims of Hurricane Katrina.  He has made headlines skydiving, including jumps on his 80th and 85th birthdays.
