Our Afternoon on Ometepe Island

Stone idols in
Altagracia

The eagle headed
idol is on the 500
cordoba bill.

Antonio told us that
people have climbed
onto the idols.

We tour an old church for
50 Cordoba admission -
$2.00 American.

This predates motorized
hearses.

A visit to the Ometepe
Ecological Preserve

This preserve has many types
of trees including the national
trees of Nicaragua, Costa Rica
& Panama.

Laguna Verde
(Green Lagoon)

Crossing a narrow strip of land,
we are again at Lake Nicaragua.

This is
Paradise Island.

It's all so beautiful.

I caught this monkey
heading down the tree.

It's time to head back to
Moyogalpa to catch the ferry.

Our view as we sip cervezas
& wait for the ferry to arrive.

This man directs cars
to get in line for the ferry.

The guard with the shot gun directed a man in tee shirt that said, "Stick a fork in me, I'm done!" to take our 81 Cordobas and get a receipt for taxes for the car.  In the meantime, a young woman walked up to us and, what we got out of her questioning is, "Where is your receipt?"

We showed her the receipt we had
for taxes for the car and she kept
shaking her head and asking
for another receipt, we think.

I told her, "No habla Espanol."  Our confusion and fear mounted.
Would we get off the island?   She grabbed a young lady
walking by and explained what she was doing.

We looked carefully at her receipt
book & surmised that she was
collecting taxes...
municipal taxes for the car.

Eric asked how much & she said
40 Cordoba ($1.60 American).
We gave her the money, got
a receipt & boarded the
ferry for San Jorge.

Our return trip to San Jorge took one hour and 20 minutes.  The Hikers GPS worked great for helping us find the beach house in the dark.

We had a great time on Ometepe Island.  If you go by ferry with a car, be prepared to pay two types of taxes at Moyogalpa before you leave.
