Driving North on the Dempster Highway, Part II

We stop by the side of the road so
I can take this picture.

This section of road is
wet & pot holed.

Eric thinks the white bags are
full of Calcium Chloride, a
preparation used to keep
dust down on unpaved roads.

This intrepid bicyclist is
heading south.

We drive through a road cut &
see the sandstone that supports
the Eagle Plain Plateau.

Dempster Highway

This is the first site that has services on the southern end of this 458 mile road.

built on bedrock in 1978.

The Dempster Highway is built on permafrost.  Building a road  is difficult.  Permanent buildings built on permafrost must be carefully constructed so that the frozen ground doesn't thaw and heave.

We arrive at the Arctic Circle
at 9:28 pm.

Here's the video Eric took.

After taking pictures &
having a celebratory drink,
Eric & I continue north
Territory Border.

We reach the border at
10:30 pm, take pictures &
settle in for the night.

This has been an amazing day!  Eric and I are at Mile 288.9 on the Dempster Highway.  The terrain we traveled through was varied:  Rounded, tree covered mountains; jagged, rocky mountains; vast plains, some covered with Black Spruce; lakes and rivers.

There are few travelers on the road.  We are well stocked with fuel, propane and food.  I'm glad we decided to drive the Dempster.
