The USS Laffey at Charleston, South Carolina









has Patriot Point, the home of 









The Laffey DD-724 was named 
for the Laffey DD-459.
The first Laffey was sunk at the




The  Laffey DD-724 was commissioned on February 8, 1944 and supported D-Day troop landings on Normandy on June 6, 1944 before being sent to the Pacific Theater during World War II.  During the Battle of Okinawa, she survived Japanese bombardment 
and kamakazi attacks.

 In 1946, the Laffey was present for the atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll and saw service during the Korean War.  She was decommissioned in 1975 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
