Adam asked us to go visit the Chalmette (Shalmette) Battlefield. This is the site
of the Battle of New Orleans.
This is the site of the final battle
of the War of 1812.
Major General
Andrew Jackson hastily
assembled an army.
Major General Edward Pakenham
lead the battle hardened British
Army.
The British attack was undermanned
because of delays in crossing the
Mississippi River.
American troops laid down withering
fire. Members of the British Command
were killed.
Surrender to the Americans followed.
This battle confirmed that
American Democracy
triumphs over European
aristocracy & entitlement.
In 1852, the Louisiana Legislature appropriated funds to purchase land at the battlefield
and to build a monument. Funding problems delayed the project, which was
completed in 1900. In 1939 the Chalmette National Historic Park was
created and the site became part of the National Parks Service.
