Thomas Jefferson designed the Capitol. He was very interested in Roman architecture and modeled this building after the Maison de Carree in Nimes, France.
A 27,000 square foot addition
was built beneath the Capitol.

This State Capitol excited and energized us. The statues and paintings in the Capitol
are so impressive. Jo Ann gave a great tour. The history she shared with us made me
appreciate Richmond's and this Capitol's importance in our history.
