The South Carolina State House in Columbia

Eric liked the trees and statues around the State House.  One of the monuments includes a Palmetto Tree for soldiers of the Mexican American War

Construction on this building started in 1855 and was halted during
the Civil War.  The State House was completed in 1907.

The South Carolina State House has a fifteen minute film about the building, art work and grounds.  This proved to be a great introduction to the tour.

Blue granite columns are
carved from a single
block of stone.

The Rotunda is an interior dome.
The exterior dome has windows in
it that provide natural lighting.

The Senate Chamber has
portraits of influential
State Senators.

The gallery rings
the Senate.

The State House of
Representatives

The skylight illuminates
the central room.

The former Legislative Library
was turned into a conference
room for the Senate and the
House of Representatives.

The iron staircases
are spectacular!

This State Capitol energized and excited Eric and me.  He loved the exterior.
I found the interior to be resplendent.  This is the jewel of South Carolina.
