China Ranch Date Farm.
The steep, twisting dirt
road brought us to
China Ranch Date Farm.
Chinese Borax Miner, Ah Foo, started farming and raising livestock in this secluded valley in the 1890s. His farm was known as the "China Man's Ranch." Visitors came to the valley to enjoy the cool stream and shady trees. In 1900, a man named Morrison arrived and ran
Ah Foo off, claiming the ranch as his own. The property changed hands several times before being bought by the Charles Brown, Jr. and Bernice Sorrells, son and daughter of area pioneer and long time California State Senator Charles Brown of Shoshone.
Shoots from date palms are
removed and planted to start
new date palm trees.
These date palms will be
used for the date crop or
sold for landscaping.
China Ranch Date Farm sells date palms up to fifteen feet tall for landscaping. These trees are low maintenance and popular throughout the southwest.
China Date Ranch has
13 varieties of dates.

Eric is sampling dates.
I browsed the books.
I checked out the jams,
jellies, honey & gifts.
The putters with polished
stone heads are my favorites.
Buy your cacti, succulents
& date palm trees at
Palapa Nursery.
Smaller plants are sheltered
in the greenhouse.
Nearby is a three sided kiosk
highlighting area attractions.
Eric bought honey and medjool dates, a small loaf of date nut bread, a magnet and some post cards.
I'm glad we came here. Eric was out of dates, the drive here was beautiful and I love spending time at a lush oasis in the desert.
