The Volcano & Tastes of Hawaii Tour, Part 3: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

We stop at the Kilauea
some information

Eric & I walked to Volcano
 House & their Kileauea
overlook.

Our first view of steaming
Kilauea, home of the

Hawaii is a very rainy State.  Groundwater seeps through the porous Volcanic Rock into hot Lava, boils, and creates the steam we see.

The nearby Overlook
is crowded with
visitors.

I join others to take
pictures of the Volcano.

This shot shows the depth
of the Crater.

Eric and I reminisce about our visit to Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua in December 2012. Masaya is a Shield Volcano, like Kilauea and other Hawaiian Volcanoes.

Established in 1898 the Camp is the first Military Construction in Hawaii.  It was used for Off Base Recreation in the early 1900s.  During World War II this remote Military Installation was used as a Japanese Internment Camp.  It is now a Hotel.

Our next stop is the Steam Vents.

Steam rises from cracks
in the ground.

This vent is fenced off.

Rangers ask that visitors
not toss coins into it.

Stefan told me that Rangers wear protective gear to protect them from the heat while removing tossed in items,

Stefan & Eric watch
the steam rise.

Steam rises in the distance as Stefan drives us to our next stop.

Eric & I follow the Kilauea
Iki Trail to the Lava Tube.

We are using one of Stefan's
flashlights.

The trail has railings, steps,
 & swooping inclines.

the opening to the
Lava Tube.

It's dark as a tomb in there.

We keep to the middle of the
Lava Ttube so we don't
hit our heads on the
sloping walls.
There are other Lava Tubes in the United States.  Eric and I visited one near La Pine Oregon.

As we leave Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park, Stefan starts the

We are going to Volcano Winery for tastings and lunch.
