Watch for Nenes
Next 1 Mile
Nenes are native to Hawaii and this is their only habitat. The State Bird is endangered by the loss of their habitat; rats, dogs, the Mongoose, and diseases. They are too often hit by cars and trucks.
After years of steep population decline, the Nene was placed on the Endangered Species List. The population is growing and now the bird is listed as a Threatened Species.

Great Statue.
This is one of four commissioned statues of the Hawaiian Islands Unifier. The first one is near Iolani Palace in Honolulu. The second one was placed near the King's birthplace in Kohala, on the Island of Hawaii as is this one in Hilo. The fourth statue is in National Statuary Hall in the US Capitol.
