This is a bascule bridge. The white box is the counterbalance weight that controls the height of the bridge deck. When the counterbalance weight is above the bridge, the bridge deck is flat, connecting both sides of the river. When the counterweight is lowered, the bridge deck rises to allow boats and ships to pass along the river.
Lake Erie is just three miles north of Ashtabula...
We continue north to Walnut Beach on Lake Erie.
It's a perfect day for a visit.
