Fort Street on Mackinac Island

 Eric and I walk leave Main Street for  Fort Street... 

The American Fur Company Store

sold general merchandise to the

island community.

Medical history was made on Mackinac Island:  On June 6, 1822, Alexis St. Martin, a Canadian traveler, was accidentally shot in the store.  Dr. William Beaumont tended to St. Martin.  The wound healed, leaving a permanent opening to his stomach.  Dr. Beaumont recorded observations on the digestibility of food, the temperature of the stomach under certain conditions, and was able to extract some gastric acid.  His research was published eight years later and provided groundbreaking information on the digestive process.

The McGulpin House

was built in 1780

The modern siding covers &

preserves the original

 log cabin structure.

This is a recreation of the 1670-71 Mission started by French Jesuit Priests Claude Dablon and Jacques Marquette.  

Mission Church is part of the

 mission established by

 New England Protestants.

This Church was built in 1829.

Fort Mackinac was established 

during the Revolutionary War.

It remained a military outpost

until its closure in 1895.

The Fort lines the crest of the hill,

above Marquette Park.

I stand behind the cannon &

see it's aimed at the island's

shoreline.

the view to the harbor.
