Remembering the Alamo and Its Defenders

The story of fighting against all odds at the Alamo has been immortalized.

Commanders Jim Bowie and William Travis along with frontiersman Davy Crockett are featured in each film and remembered in other ways too.

Jim Bowie is best remembered for the Bowie Knife.  Bowie Street is in downtown San Antonio. A school, a city and a county in Texas are named for him.   The Adventures of Jim Bowie , the CBS TV Series ran from 1956 to 1958.

San Antonio honors William B. Travis with a park named in his honor.  Travis has a number of public schools named him in Grand Prairie, Marshall, Austin, Dallas and Richmond, Texas. The William B. Travis Building is located in the Capitol Complex in Austin.  The William Travis County Building is in Richmond.

Davy Crockett is best known for his signature Coon Skin Cap.  San Antonio's Crockett Street is adjacent to the Riverwalk.  Cities, counties and schools in Tennessee and Texas bear his name.

There are many Davy Crockett films and two plays.  I grew up watching Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier on TV.

I was surprised to find William Travis & Davy Crockett in the

Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode Bada-Bing Bada-Bang.  

Senior Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien plays Davy Crockett and Dr. Julian Bashir plays William Travis in a holo-deck simulation recreating the  Battle of the Alamo.  After their historical recreation, O'Brien and Bashir meet at Quark's and debate fine points of this battle where two hundred men gave their lives for freedom.
