Colorado was admitted to the union in 1876. Denver was chosen as the Capital City. Architect Elijah E. Myers' design of Colorado's People's House is based on the United States Capitol. Constructed in the 1890s, the State Capitol opened in 1894.

The theme of the murals is water, Colorado's invaluable resource. Each panel shows how people of Colorado have used water from the Native Americans through the 1940s. Thomas Hornsby Ferrill's poem, Here Is A Land Written In Water accompanies the murals.

Thirty-five Senators are elected for four year terms to represent the people of their districts. Colorado limits the consecutive terms of State Senators to two terms, a total of eight years.

Colorado's People's House is an architectural delight. Many of its original details remain today because of careful renovation and preservation.
