A fellow tourist took this
shot of Eric & me at
Mission San Juan.
Remains of the Mission's
walls.
Built in 1756, this stone church and its granary were central to life in this area. The crops raised here supported the Mission and local settlements.
Eric in front of the church.
It is the only Mission that
has a plastered exterior, as
part of recent renovations.
We are disappointed that the church is locked. A Park Ranger told us that a breakin is why no one is allowed inside. In 2000 thieves broke into the building and stole statues from the Sanctuary.
The ceiling is timbered.
Mission San Juan does not
have a vaulted ceiling.
Three statues look down
on the Altar.
I noticed Roman Numerals
along a wall outside the
church.
