Harquahala Mine and Cemetery Near Salome, Arizona

Eric drives toward Salome.

Harquahala Mine is located

Abandoned buildings at
the mine.

Spanish explorers found gold in the Harquahala region in 1780s.  Pima Indians drove off prospectors.   Herman Ehrenburg and Henry Wickenburg found gold in 1863.  Harquahala Mine produced high grade gold ore.  Like many gold mines, the veins of gold became less and less productive, and the mine closed in 1907.

This is all that remains of
one of the buildings.

I wonder if this pile is
debris from mining gold.

The nearby cemetery

Researchers found over
50 graves.

This is the only grave with a
cement slab topping it.

No one knows who is buried here.
