Ralph Nader's 1965 book, Unsafe at Any Speed focused on his years of research on American Automobile Safety. He concluded that passenger safety was not a primary concern of American Automakers for the fifty-plus years of information that he reviewed.
Nader took aim at the Corvair for its one-piece steering column which can impale drivers in front-end collisions and the car's rear-end suspension deficiencies. The Corvair had other chronic problems - its near-constant oil leakage and a car heater that pumped noxious fumes into the car.
