My Morning in Skagway, Alaska

The Norwegian Joy is docked in
front of another Cruise Ship.

My plan was to walk the length of the pier into town.  Now people take trolleys into town.

damaged the pier & closed it.

The visiting Cruise Ship was not
impacted & no one was injured.

Cruisers were ferried back to their Ship by small boats and by a trolley.

The debris was cleaned up. Repairs to the pier started.  More slides occurred.  There was more damage to the pier, and a Cruise Ship was damaged.

Suddenly, there was mooring space for just three Ships instead of the four that the town relies on.  Some Cruiselines stopped coming to Skagway for the rest of the 2022 Season.

A Team of Geologists came to study the mountainside.   Retreating glaciers left this area vulnerable to slides.

Chain link fencing was placed in the slide area to prevent other rocks from impacting the pier.   A retaining wall was built at the base of the mountain to further protect people and the pier.

The latest rockslide occurred in May 2025.  So far, this Summer Season has been busy.  Residents are monitoring the mountainside, and the  Cruise Ship Companies are kept updated on the situation.

Welcome to

Eric and I visited here in May 2014.

Skagway was created by the Klondike Gold Rush in Canada's Yukon Territory (1896 - 1899).  The people who settled here supplied prospectors with supplies for their trip to the Gold Mines and mining equipment.

I love the architecture here.  Downtown is a Historic District.
