Final preparation of the nuclear
core of The Gadget occurred here.
Visitors file into the
small house.
On July 13, 1945, two hemispheres of Plutonium and an initiator were brought to the house from the lab at Los Alamos.
The scientists made do with
the facilities at hand.
The master bedroom was
turned into a clean room.
Workbenches and tables were installed. To keep dust and sand out of the instruments and tools, the windows and doorways were covered with plastic and sealed with tape. Cracks in the wall were also covered with tape.
The assembly team made up of Louis Slotin, Boyce McDaniel and Cyril Smith arrived and began to assemble the nuclear core of The Gadget's bomb. They tried to use only the tools and materials from a special kit they were given for their assignment. Everything step of the assembly was documented. Others would assemble other nuclear cores for other bombs if this test at Trinity was successful.
The test at Trinity, just two
miles away was successful.
The ranch house was largely
left intact.
Most of the windows were blown out. The barn was damaged and its roof eventually collapsed. The house remained empty and was stabilized in 1986. The rehabilitation program started in 2016. The goal of the project is to ensure that this historic house is managed in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act.
