Eric, Adam and I "hit the road at 5:30 am to head north...  Our first stop is Scotty's Restaurant at the Wilton Travel Plaza, just off of Exit 16 of the Northway (Interstate 87 North).

It's not yet daylight.

Birds are roosting on
 the SUNOCO sign.

The canopy above the
gas pumps is lit up.

The guys settle into
a booth.

Ongoing reports of Hurricane
Harvey making landfall in
Texas are on the nearby TV.

We are here to "fuel up" before

A Visit to Schmaltz Brewing Company in Clifton Park, New York

Eric, Mal, Elsie & I walk
across Fairchild Square
to Schmaltz Tasting
Room.

recommends drinking
local & drinking fresh brews.

Schmaltz Swag....

Sit on the comfy couches
for a long conversation...

Mal, Elsie, Eric & I
are here to sample
the beers....

I love the old door that has been re-purposed as a table top.

Let's go to the bar to start
our beer sampling.

Eric and I preferred the Messiah Nut Brown Ale.  We are not IPA fans, so many of Scmaltz's brews go unsampled.

Schmaltz Brewing Company beers have been winning awards for twenty years.  Their brews can be found in over 30 states, the District of Columbia and Canada.

We bought Symbiosis,
Jewbelation 20 &
Klingon
Imperial Ale.

Symbiosis and Klingon Imperial Ale were brewed to commemorate 30th Anniversary of  the initial airing of Star Trek the Next Generation television series.  As avid Star Trek fans, Eric
and I had to indulge...

Touring & Tasting @ Yankee Distillers in Clifton Park, New York

Eric & I drove to Clifton Park
for a tour & tasting at

Mal & Elsie joined us.

The Yankee Distillers logo
is made up of seedhead
of the Rye plant.

Tee Shirts & Hats are
available.

One of the two Pugs that
"run" the place.

The Bar

Scott takes us into the next room to share the science and the craft of distilling spirits.

Yankee Distillers starts
with huge bags of grains
& corn.

The chosen "starters" for
spirits go into the large
machine behind Scott
& Elsie.

Rye, corn, oats... whatever Scott and his partner, Matt, decide to distill goes into this device to be ground into a course flour.

This is the Mash Tank.

The ground wheat, rye or
corn is added to water
that has been set to a
specific temperature.

The temperature water activates enzymes that break down  the complex carbohydrates of the grain, or corn into simple sugars.

The mixture is moved to
one of the Fermenters.

The one behind the ladder is the General Sherman.  The one on the right is the General Grant. Adding yeast allows the microscopic agents to "eat sugars." producing alcohol and Carbon Dioxide.  The next step is to move the fermented product to the still.

The Still & it's accompanying
equipment is beautiful.

I like the copper and the swirly silver at the base of the equipment.

Distilling is where the science and the craft of making spirits come together.  During this process, water is removed and distilled spirits are carefully checked until the sought after flavors and alcohol content are achieved.

Depending on the recipe, the spirit will be bottled after distilling, or if it will be aged, it goes into oak barrels.

 Vodka is not aged.

This spirit is moved from the
 Still to these tanks were
it waits to be bottled.

Aged spirits, the Whiskeys,
are put in barrels to age.

We go back to the bar to taste Yankee Distillers' spirits.

Mat explains the flavor &
 mouth feel characteristics
of the distilled spirits
 produced here.

He carefully takes us through tastings of Vodka, made with malted wheat, Rye and Bourbon. This process is like a wine tasting.  There are upfront flavors, the feel of each spirit in the mouth and the finish.

As a non whiskey drinker, I was amazed at the different flavors in a tasting.   I expected the Rye and the Bourbon to be harsh.  The Rye has honey and peppery flavors.  The Bourbon flavors go from sweet corn to honey, with a wisp of smoke.

We bought Rye,
Eleven Lakes Vodka
& Bourbon.
Yankee Distillers is open Wednesday through Sunday.  If you can't fit in a trip to Clifton Park
for a tour, these fine spirits are available at Route 9 Wine and Liquor Warehouse,  and other stores in the area.

Viewing the Partial Solar Eclipse in Rotterdam, N.Y. on August 21, 2017

Eric and I were not prepared to view the August 21st Partial Solar Eclipse in Rotterdam, New York. Because we weren't traveling to one of the many sites across our country to see the Total Eclipse, we forgot to purchase Eclipse Glasses, until it was too late.

There were no glasses to be found, anywhere in the Capital District, and they were on back order at Amazon.com.  Eric checked the internet and found out that Number 14 Welders Glass can be used.  I started calling area Welding Supply stores, in hopes of purchasing a piece of glass, to no avail.

Fortunately, I am related to a welder.  My brother, Stan, gave us Welders Glass to use for the Eclipse. He's awesome!

Eric mounted the Welders Glass in a cereal box
& added instructions.

Lots of instructions.

Mounted in the cereal box, we have extra protection from the sun's rays during the Eclipse.

Eric views the start of
the Eclipse from
Jerry's porch.

Jerry watches the "Moon
eat the Sun."

She asks about the next Eclipse. On April 8, 2024 a solar eclipse will start in Mexico and move north east.  The path of the full eclipse will cross western New York, northeast New York and northern Vermont in 2024. Mark you calendars!

Golden Harvest Farms in Valatie, New York

After putting our purchases from Harvest Spirits Farm Distillery in our car...

Eric told the young
woman working at
the cash register
that this is heaven...

Eric would take home one of each of the baked goods, but he won't.

He selected a bouquet

Don't forget
the Cherries!

Golden Harvest Farms has fresh and sweet, fresh and hot, fresh and sour....  and a lot more. Take a drive to the Hudson Valley, stop in Valatie and bring home some of the region's bounty.
