Ocracoke is proud of its
link to Black Beard,
a notorious pirate.

Blackbeard and his pirate crew visited Ocracoke Island during their time raiding merchant and slave ships in the early 1700s.  North Carolinians grew tired of piracy and asked for help to drive off Blackbeard.

Royal Navy Lieutenant Robert Maynard was given command of the Jane and Ranger and sent after Blackbeard.   While fleeing Royal Navy ships, Blackbeard, aboard the Adventurer, entered Ocracoke Harbor.  A pitched battle occurred there on November 22, 1718.  Blackbeard and his crew were killed.

Ocracoke honors
its war dead.

German U-Boats prowled the coast of North Carolina during World War II and sank numerous US ships.

There are many books
on wildlife here.
