Granada, Nicaragua

Granada is a very special place for me.  This city on Lake Nicaragua exudes the charm of Old Spain in its Colonial churches, parks with gazebos.  Decorated horse drawn carriages are a common site on these streets.  The buildings here show off ornate woodwork and old world charm.  Moorish influences in Spain are found here, on the facades of public buildings and at artisan galleries.

Construction started on this
Cathedral in 1905 &
ended in 1915.

Grand Gazebo

The entrance to this municipal
building has a Moorish influence.

I think there's competition for
the prettiest horse & carriage
in this town.

Many churches have
domes here.

Granada has a thriving trade in area tours.  Many shops sell tours to Zapatera and
Ometepe Islands, Masaya and Mombacho Volcanoes, fishing excursions etc.

I imagine there are buildings
like these in Spain.

I love the balconies!

You can sight see from
the tower of this church.

Granada gets very warm as the day progresses.  You can linger over lunch and cervezas and
watch the world go by at outdoor cafes.  Ever wonder where you are?  Look up
and find Mombacho Volcano.  It will help orient you in this lovely old city.

This is my favorite Moorish
doorway in Granada.

Granada is a city that is full of energy and renewal.  Here's a construction area that will
make Lake Nicaragua more accessible.

This boulevard is getting a major
 makeover with wider sidewalks.

Eric and I found excellent tourist information and maps here.  The map we bought of
Nicaragua and Managua is the most detailed one we have seen to date.

Our last stop, Fuerte La Polvora,
constructed in 1748.

We had a wonderful day in Granada and expect to visit again, soon.
