The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland Rocks!

The City's shoreline hosts the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I.M. Pei designed this eclectic building.

Since September 1995, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been paying tribute to the origins of Rock and Roll and its evolution from the early 1950s to today.

Rock & Roll's Roots:  The Blues, Country, Folk, Gospel & Rhythm & Blues.

The Post World War II years were prosperous American families had disposable income after years of frugality.  Music was no longer being written and produced exclusively for adults.  Young people had money at their disposal and were making their own Music Choices.  Styles change, fads change, and Music changes too.

The world was changing...  The Cold War with Russia was escalating.  The quiet acceptance of Cultural Conformity was giving way to the Civil Rights Movement and the Women's Movement, and then the backlash came...

Some adults in America protest Music in an effort to delay change that makes them feel uncomfortable & want to return America to a simpler time.

There were group protests and records deemed offensive were burned.  Some Radio Stations stopped playing objectionable Rock Songs.

In 1985 the Parental Music Resource Center was founded with the goal of increasing parental control of access to music deemed to have violent, drug-related, or sexual content.  Their goals were the creation of a Music Rating System, Parental Advisory Labeling, and printing all song lyrics on album covers.

On September 19, 1985, PMRC advocates and Music Artists testified before a Senate Committee.  Is Parental Advisory Labeling a form of First Amendment Censorship?  Frank Zappa, John Denver, and Dee Snider testified for Freedom of Speech and the First Amendment.

After years of haggling, the Radio Industry Association of America did voluntarily add Parent Advisory Labels to music deemed to have violent, drug-related, or sexual content.  The Music Rating System continues to be used on digital music.

Back to the Music Exhibits...  Here are my favorites.

Janis' HUGE voice and Bluesy Rock Songs propelled her into Rock and Roll History.

Seattle's Museum of Contemporary Art has a great Jimi Hendrix display.
