I cannot feel
That all is well, when darkening clouds conceal
The shining sun;
But then, I know
He lives & loves; & say since it is so,
Thy will be done.

Emil and his family immigrated from Hungary in 1862.  They kept their language and distinctive Romani culture when they settled in Mississippi.  Locals became suspicious of their new neighbors and referred to them as Gypsies.
