Bowie was named to honor
American pioneer & soldier
Jim Bowie's adventures on the frontier and his death at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas in 1836 made him a Texas hero. (Texas became a state in 1845.) The large, versatile knife Bowie carried was named after him and became very popular.
It remains popular and is manufactured in different states, but not here in Bowie.

We visit the World's Largest Bowie Knife.
The community project took years to complete, starting with fundraising and site selection. The 20-foot-long knife was mounted on its platform and unveiled in 2016. Displays surrounding the knife detail all the phases of the project.
