Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist in Spokane, Washington

I  love to spend time examining architectural details of buildings as we travel across the United States.  Churches are among my favorite buildings to photograph because of architects' attention to detail across the decades and centuries.

Today we are visiting the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist.

Eric parks on 12th Avenue.

This is our first view of the

Right Reverend Edward Mankin Cross and Architect Harold C. Whitehouse worked on the design of this house of worship and included many French influences.  It was built on this hill overlooking Downtown Spokane.

The Cathedral from the corner
of 12tth Avenue & South Grand
 Boulevard.

It's not easy to photograph a massive Cathedral on a hill.   I rely on the surrounding streets for places to take pictures from.

The entrance is on the left,
in shadow.

Grand Boulevard median

The Rose Window & Entrance
are easily seen from East
Summer Avenue.

This angle does not flatter the Cathedral's soaring, majestic structure.

This is an Episcopal Cathedral.

I thought all Cathedrals were
Roman Catholic...

It's time to consult the internet... Dictionary,com defines a Cathedral as the church building with the bishop's throne, the place of a bishop's authority.  A bishop supervises several churches.

The Roman CatholicAnglican, including  US Episcopal, and some Lutheran Churches have Cathedrals because they are the bishops' "administrative"  buildings.

Travel leads to all kinds of learning experiences, like today.

This is another example of how important details are...  I thought I was visiting a Roman Catholic Church when I was at the Virgin Mary of Czestochowa Church in LathamNew York.  The Holy Water Dispenser near the door is the only detail that stood out to me as not in keeping with Catholic traditions.  This very Roman Catholic-looking Church is a Polish National Catholic Church and does not follow all the doctrines of the Pope in Rome.
