Day Two: US 50 East to Ely, Nevada

It's time to shove off...

We stop at Speedway Casino to
 get diesel for the motorhome.

We are driving to a parking
area east of Ely.

US 50 Eastbound

This house needs a lot
to sit on.

This road marker is for Fairview.

The town sprang up after Silver
 was discovered in 1905.

The boom ended in 1917 &
Fairview became a ghost town.

This is one of many Nevada Historic Markers along US 50.

I wonder if that's a
salt flat ahead.

As we approached, I realized that it may be salty, but no one is doing speed trials on it.

of the sign's solar panels.

We stretch our legs at

The Bar/Restaurant is a former
Pony Express Station.

We skipped Middlegate Station's
famous Monster Burger.

A close-up of the giant Shoe Tree.

There's a turnoff on the left just
past this landmark.

Eric & I pass a working
windmill.

The tank at its base is
full of water.

A Dust Devil travels across
the sandy terrain.

Cows out for an afternoon
walk.

Eric pulls over for lunch.

Eric has a great reason for
stopping in an Emergency
Parking Lane...

He's hungry!

Eric points out this tunnel in the
mountainside.

We think it's the entry to a mine.

Eric stopped so that I take pics

My Uncle Paul lived his dream, starting as a Fireman on coal-powered trains and working his way up to Engineer on diesel-powered trains at New York Central Railroad.

We agree that the Liquor Store/
Motel was once a Gas Station

for our overnight spot.

We level the motorhome, put
out the slides, & the rains
came...
This is the view from our dining room.  Eric has the binoculars out and hopes to scan the open terrain after the rain ends.  It's going to be very quiet tonight, and dark.
