The Musical Road in Lancaster, California

While looking for things to do near our Campground in Acton, Eric found The Musical Road in Lancaster.

Melodic roadways are rare.  According to Mental Floss, there are only five grooved roads creating tunes in the entire world.   Three are in other countries: Denmark, Japan, and South Korea.

The only other road that plays a song in the US is in Tijeras, New Mexico.  Eric and I drove on The Singing Road on Route 66 between Albuquerque and Tijeras and loved it!

Everyone loved The Musical Road and traveled over it all hours of the day and night, causing complaints from people in neighboring homes.  The grooves were ground out of the road and "the music died."

People were saddened that the roadway went quiet AND Lancaster lost a popular tourist spot.  The City decided to have The Musical Road recreated in an unpopulated section of this sprawling 94.28 square mile community on Avenue G between 30th and 40th Street West.  The popular landmark and tourist spot returned AND no one is losing sleep at night listening to a snippet from The William Tell Overture.

The tune becomes recognizable at the road's speed limit - 55 miles per hour.

It's in the fast lane of
West Avenue G.

Here we go....

OR as some describe it,
the theme to The Lone Ranger.

The music isn't as rich and developed as we hoped and that's OK.  It was created by cutting grooves into a road.  This is a truly rare landmark and tourist spot that must be visited.
