Historic Homes in Americus, Georgia

The Americus Visitor Center gives out a map and three pages of descriptions of historic buildings in its city. This is a lot of work to promote historic buildings.  Let's see if the effort pays off...

The Lee House was built
in 1902.

It is now the headquarters
of Sumter Historic Trust.

home was built
in 1880s.

Twin  Folk Victorian homes
dominate this block.

The roof lines, gable decorations
 & wraparound porch on this
house are engaging.

This Italian Revival home
has low pitched roofs &
arched windows on the
first floor.

has a porch that goes on
& on.....

Looking at this house, I am
reminded of President Jimmy
Carter's boyhood home.

style home was built in
the 1920s.

The map makes it easy to find historic homes.  I'm getting a lot out of the descriptions of the homes.  The house styles and their histories allow a peek into Americus' past.

Built in 1881, this Victorian cottage
has lavish details that are key
elements of Victorian eclecticism.

An impressive walkway to
Greek Revival cottage.

A simple & elegant Colonial

 Craftsman Style homes were
popular in the early through
mid1900s.

The asymmetrical trim on
this porch made me stop
& study the house's
details.

This elegant house was
built in the 1860s.

Its long, horizontal porch
roof line & cast block
masonry make it a
 unique home.

It was interesting to travel through Americus' past as I photographed historic and period homes.
