Day One of our Two Day Drive from Homer to Valdez, Alaska

Valdez is a ten hour drive from Homer.  Eric scheduled two days of driving for to get there.  We will overnight in Eagle River.  Including stops along the way, today's drive will last about six hours.

It's a beautiful day
for a drive.

Summer is construction season.

From what I've experienced so
far, traffic flows through these
sites smoothly & fairly quickly.

We are leaving pavement &
will be traveling on a gravel
section of road.

PW Knives in Sterling.

Clouds cast shadows across
the mountain.

This newly constructed section
 of road has narrow, soft
 road shoulders.

Each lane is 12 feet wide, allowing

for enough space for cars, RVS,
larger trucks, motorhomes to
safely fit in each lane.

People are out fishing.

We  turn on to Alaska
Route 1 & continue
north to Anchorage.

Here comes the rain, again...

Will the cloud engulf
the mountain?

Twenty minutes later it's
bright & sunny.

This is the first police car I've
seen in Alaska watching traffic
& acting as a visual cue for
drivers to slow down.

Banners hang from a bridge...

Welcome to Alaska Mehel Family!
Welcome to Alaska Rori!

Eric and I are overnighting at the Fred Meyer in Eagle River, just north of Anchorage.  Eric will use the coupon Nathan gave us at the Fred Meyer in  Soldotna to get 20 cents per gallon off on 35 gallons of diesel fuel.  We will dump and fill our tanks and continue to Valdez tomorrow.
