The Zulu Parade on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday)

Happy Mardi Gras!  Fat Tuesday marks the last day before Lent.  It's time to load up on all the goodies that Catholics will deprive themselves of during Lent. The parades are scheduled early in the day here with Zulu stepping off at 8 am.

I wake at 7:30 am to music.  As I look out the bathroom window, I see lots of people. The parade route passes close to The French Quarter RV Resort, but not so close that I should be able to see people milling around.

Eric is keeping tabs on the progress of the parade on the WDSU App.  We head out around 10 am, and we found a tailgate party.

We thought there would be parking
under the highway, but not RVs too.

Forward-thinking people
bring a port-a-potty.

This is where the parade
will pass under the highway.

The Zulu Marchers
follow a Rifle Unit.

There are no police barricades here and as the parade stops for a few minutes, people come out to greet the marchers and take pictures with them.

The parade was stopped for about half an hour.  Eric and I continued to walk the parade route.

The Queen's Float

A quick check on the chicken
as a new float comes into view.

Everyone is looking for some
throws.

Zulu is famous for handing out
coconuts.

Zulu men have painted faces.
They don't wear masks like
 other krewes.

To the right is a skyscraper
 obscured by low-lying clouds.

My favorite Zulu float...
The BP Oil drilling platform explosion
& oil spill of 2010 remains topical.

We stopped for lunch and decided to walk back to the motorhome.
We'll watch TV for Rex Parade float sightings.
