The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in San Jose, California

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is a short walk from the San Jose Museum of Art.

The building is empty and the lights have been turned off.  I'm relying on natural light from the windows as I take photos without flash.

What is a Basilica?  The word means "royal house."  In the Catholic Church, a basilica is a church building that has been given special privileges by the Pope.

A large Holy Water Font at the
back of the Cathedral Basilica.

The pews are arranged for seating in the round.

In the Nave facing the Altar.

Looking up at the dome

The Altar in front of three
stained glass windows.

Looking at the Altar from seating on
 the right side.

Notice the curved pews.

A Day of the Dead display covers the Votive Rack in front of the portrait of Mary.

The side Altar with a statue of Jesus
& two small children.
A group comes for a wedding rehearsal.  It's time to leave...

Looking toward the back of the church...

The Holy Water Font & stained
glass windows illuminated by
the sun.

Eric and I came to San Jose to visit The Museum of Art and have an impromptu tour of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph.  This unexpected side trip is one of the reasons that we enjoy travel.
