A Day @ the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Oregon

Today Eric & I are visiting the Portland Museum of Art

This Museum has wonderful collections that span thousands of years.  I am sharing a few of my favorites in this large, two-building repository of the Arts.

I didn't expect to see a Camel in
the Asian Room.

The Bactrian Camel is from
7th to 8th Century.

Kadampa Votive Stupa

Tibet, 12th Century

Pigments on this carved wood
Guanyin survived 6+ Centuries.

I was amazed by this delicate

Religious themes were common in the Early Renaissance.

Cleopatra & the Asp
1644

This next painting has a unique subject and was just recently discovered.

The Femminiello
1760

The Femminielli, crossdressers of 18th Century Naples, were accepted in the community.  "Little female men" was a term of endearment as they were considered special, like a third sex.  Considered lucky, locals took Feminielli gambling in hopes of winning big.  The red coral necklace is a symbol of good fortune.  Because crossdressing has been considered taboo through the centuries, this painting is a very rare find.  It is the only known painting known of a Femminiello before the era of photography.

Vesuvius Erupting at Night
1790

I am happy to see more works by the following two artists who painted President Obama's and First Lady Michelle Obama's official portraits.

Saint Woman

These paintings are in the underground passage connecting the Main Building to the Mark Building.

Nympheas (Waterlilies)
1915

After spending time at the Seattle Art Museum's Monet at Etretat Exhibit, I was excited to see one of the artist's Waterlily paintings.

Young Girls Reading

I am familiar with the following four artists because of the time I've spent poring over my American Art  (The World's Greatest Art) book by Mike Mahoney.

Bonus Artwork -

Bruststrokes

I know him as a painter,
& now a sculptor.

Eric and I enjoyed our time at the Portland Museum of Art.  We saw works by familiar artists, were introduced to new ones, and learned more about art from other cultures.
