Devils Tower National Monument in Northeastern Wyoming

This is our first sighting of Devils Tower.

It was taken about 12 miles southeast of this unique geological formation.

President Theodore Roosevelt made Devils Tower the first National Monument in 1906.  He started the National Parks System to preserve America's natural wonders for all Americans.

Details of the face of this ancient Volcanic Plug come into view as Eric & I drive closer.

Devils Tower stands alone in the rolling terrain of the Northern Plains.

How was Devils Tower formed?

Scientists agree that the Magma Plug was buried beneath the Earth's surface.  They don't agree on how the Magma cooled or its relationship to the surrounding area.  There is agreement on the theories of how erosion occured around the Core, resulting in the Tower we see today.

This picture was taken near
Hulett, about 10 miles
northeast of Devils Tower.

I don't need to stand at the foot of the Monument to appreciate its enormity and rugged terrain.  Driving near it is an amazing experience!

Devils Tower was the main character in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  People from all over the world share the same paranormal experience and are inexplicably drawn to Devils Tower.  They can't explain their compulsion to scale this Volcanic Plug.  Many are stopped by misinformation and the military.  Roy and Gillian are successful and they have Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  Now we need to watch the movie again.
