Day Sixteen: US 50 East to... Luray, Virginia

Starting our sixteenth day

.

Eastern rural Ohio

Welcome to West Virginia

The Ohio River

Terracing on the hill on the right
is the result of rock blasting.

My guess is... Oil Refinery

It's Road Construction Season
Opportunity Lives Here

This bridge crosses the creek
in front of the house.

The long & winding road...

Rain slashes our windshield.

The bare bones of a deserted
home

9% Incline for the next mile

Cool Springs Park has Shakes,
Cones, Sodas, Sundaes &
Foot Long Hot Dogs.

Slow down for the curves
ahead.

Eric & I drive past a
General Store.

Maryland Welcomes You

Enjoy Your Visit

There's a stretch of straight
road ahead...

We return to West Virginia

& settles around us.

One of several small bridges
we cross on today's drive.

Welcome to Virginia

Virginia Is For Lovers

This stretch of US 50 East is
 a divided four-lane highway.

We are leaving US 50 East
to drive south on US 340/

A ghost sign on the side of a
building in Front Royal.

There are three versions of the origin of the name Front Royal.  The first version is from Colonial military commands.  The second version involves Revolutionary War.  The challenge word by the sentry was Front and the responding password was Royal.  The third version includes the French phrase "le front royale."

It feels like we're in a green,
leafy tunnel...

This chimney is the only remnant
of the house that once stood on
this spot.

Eric & I are staying at
Luray's KOA Holiday
for a few days.

It's great to stop after sixteen
days of continuous travel.
