A Blogpost In A Bag...

Eric went shopping and handed me this brown paper bag...

Then he stepped back and smiled.

This lumpy paper bag has piqued my curiosity.

Necco Wafers!  I haven't enjoyed this sweet treat since I was a girl.  (My candy preferences have changed over the past five decades.)

Eric brings me up to speed on Necco Wafers.  They are being manufactured and are available again after a two-year absence from Check Out Candy displays.

A History Lesson:  The New England Confectionary Company started making the distinctive rolls of Sugar Wafers in 1847.  Commonly known as "Hub Wafers," the easy to carry sweets were popular with Union Soldiers during the Civil War.

Explorer Admiral Byrd took two tons of Necco Wafers with him when he returned to Antarctica in 1933.

They were standard sweets in American GI's  World War II Rations.

In 2009 Necco Wafer flavor formulas were changed and glycerine was added to make Necco Wafers softer.  Fans of the candy were not impressed and sales plummeted.

The New England Candy Company suffered financial losses in 2007 and was sold to American Capital.  The Revere Plant closed in 2018 and the Spangler Candy Company purchased the Necco Wafers, Canada Mints, and the Sweethearts candy lines.

Necco Wafer fans have access to their beloved sweet treat again and younger candy lovers will now grow up with this historic, flavorful tube of fun.
