Walking Around Chinatown in Lower Manhattan

Manhattan was established by the Dutch in 1624.  The small colony grew as the gateway to the rest of New Netherland, to the north.  The British acquired this Dutch Territory in 1664 and they left following the end of the American Revolution in 1783.

Strategically placed at the mouth of the Hudson River, Manhattan became densely populated.  Over nearly 400 years, street and neighborhood names have changed as waves of immigrants from different countries settled in on this island.

is the former Five Points Park.

In the 1800s, the Five Points was a poor, crowded, crime ridden neighborhood.  The movie, Gangs of New York, was set in the Five Points.  Significant numbers of Chinese started to settle in the Five Points neighborhood in the 1880s.  Immigration laws kept the number of Chinese small, within a few thousand, until 1943.  Chinatown grew and Five Points disappeared.
