Day Two: New York to Texas, Our Off Highway Travels, PA to MD

On November 9th, we leave
the Lewisburg Walmart
under a cloudy sky.

Maintenance District
 3 - 8

I try to get photos of states' Department of Transportation buildings, trucks and signs for Eric, a New York State Department of Transportation retiree.

A tractor trailer with a
very wide load

This Amish Buggy shares
the road with cars,
trucks, motorhomes...

A bright spot on a
dreary day

Eric likes the lights on
this tractor trailer.

Watch for snowmobiles
near Hairy John State
Forest Picnic Area.

A camouflaged tank in front

Watch out for Deer.

They are active during this time of year, their mating season.

Eric & I reminisce about the Green
Acres TV series when we see
the Oliver Farms barn, as we
follow the road to the left.

Lincoln Caverns is
nearby.

That's right, the next turn
has a 10 mile per hour
speed limit.

Well... well...

Our motorhome is
4 feet taller than
the underpass.

Eric and I unhitch our Jeep.  Eric turns our 40 foot Winnebago Vectra motorhome around.  I re-hitch the Jeep to the motorhome and we start back the way we came.

We backtracked to the sign
we missed.

We should have turned to
the right at the Oliver
Farms barn.

The only way to continue our
drive southwest in this section
of Pennsylvania is to drive on

This is my leg of today's
drive.

Eric's traditional pic of
his feet as we drive
beneath a highway
overpass.

We drive past construction
workers.

After about twenty miles, I leave the highway for Pennsylvania's windy two lane roads.

A Christmas Tree clears
trimmed Pines that
overhang the road.

The Christmas Tree fits
easily beneath the
14 foot 5 inch tall bridge.

The next bridge is 12 feet
10 inches tall on the road
shoulder.

Our motorhome is 12 feet 4 and a half inches tall.  It will be close, but we'll be OK.  Eric will drive slowly.

The Christmas Tree has
plenty of clearance
beneath the curved
overpass.
We easily pass beneath this bridge too.

The Pied Piper beckons children

I see a creepy, scary movie with children hiding from the unseen evil presence in The Old Woman's Shoe.

This barn commemorates
US Route 30, the Lincoln
Highway, which spans the
US from coast to coast.

We climb a mountain,
into the fog.

Eric slowed down and we watched several cars, without their headlights on, materialize out of the fog.

We rose above the fog &
found ourselves at Bald
Knob Summit, Elevation
2906 feet.

Eric muses about the location of The Cowsills' Indian Lake.  Indian Lake in Ohio claimed to be the lake in the song.  Indian Lake in New York has been considered the lake of song.  The Cowsills lived in Rhode Island and visited Indian Lake in their home state.

The star on the barn
is lovely.

A charming country church

Acres of Field Corn
go on & on.

Eric and I have been reading all the road signs.  We will not be unhitching again because of another low clearance.

This one lane underpass
is 13 feet 6 inches.

No one had to wait for us.

Wind Turbines line the
mountain ridge above
Meyersdale

A quiet country road

Eric and I crossed into Maryland, but there was no sign at the state line on this secondary road.   We are not surprised by this.

This is what I imagine
rural Ireland looks like
in the fall.

We arrive in Oakland.

is on the Farmers Market
sign.

This is the official Maryland
marker for today's drive.

We are parked on the edge of
the Walmart parking lot
in Oakland.

The view from our windshield
at this hilltop store.

Eric looks for an app with bridge and underpass clearance information.  Trucker Path includes the information we need, and a lot more.
