The Old State Capitol in Historic Downtown Frankfort, Kentucky

Kentucky was admitted as the 15th state in the Union on June 1, 1792.  Frankfort was chosen as the Capital city on December 5, 1792.

This is Kentucky's third State Capitol, completed in 1830.  The first State Capitol was destroyed in 1813.  Again, fire razed the and the second State Capitol, another wood structure, in 1824.





This statue commemorates
 William Goebel's service to
 Kentucky as State Senator,
Senate President &
Governor.









William Goebel as the Democratic nominee for Governor and lost the general election to Republican William Taylor on November 7, 1999, by a narrow margin.  The Democratic Party contested the election and Goebel received death threats.  He was shot on January 30, 1900, while entering the State House.  The Democratic controlled legislature declared Goebel the winner of the election.  Three days after being named Governor, Goebel died of his wounds, on February 3, 1900.
