Walking The Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico

The Plaza was established
who established Santa Fe
as the capital of New
Mexico, in 1610.

Over time, the walls of the defensive fortress walls gave way to large homes built by high ranking Spanish military officers and officials.  In 1822, the plaza became the western end of the Santa Fe Trail, strengthening the importance of this center of government and trade.

Santa Fe's state government moved on to other buildings in the city.  The Plaza remained the center of trade.  Today, The Plaza continues to be a popular meeting place and shopping destination in Santa Fe.
