We are stopped for a
construction zone.
Eric, retired New York State Department of Transportation Civil Engineer, tells me that the truck is spraying a "tack coat" emulsion that acts like glue between the old and new layers of blacktop.
We follow a "Pilot Car"
for several miles through
the construction zone.
Gravel is laid down.
The next piece of equipment
adds hot asphalt emulsion to
the gravel before the blacktop
is rolled out.
Eric explains that paving with blacktop is set up like a train and the process covers a lot
of ground.
