Geocashing with John & Carol in Bergem, New York

Eric and I are doing something different today.  We going geocaching (treasure hunting) today with fellow Escapees,  John & Carol.

Eric is using the Geocaching App on his phone to navigate to the GPS coordinates provided by the people who planted the caches.  John and Carol are using their handheld GPS device to guide them today.  After we arrive at the specific coordinates, we search for a hidden stash.

The first cache we looked for
is located at Gillam-Grant
Community Center.

The GPS coordinates brought us to thick brush adjacent to the Community Center.  The four of us poked around it the overgrowth for several minutes.

Eric found this small container.

This little flower & a geocache log
are stored inside the re-purposed
medicine bottle.

John signs the log with
his & Carol's geocache
handle.

Later, he will log this find
at the Geocache Website.

Our next stop is nearby

The GPS device & GPS App
lead us to this fence.

The cache is not in the grass at the fence line or in the vines that climb it.

We are stumped!

After Eric inspects the fence,
he starts wiggling the finial...

There's the cache!

It's loaded with smooth
stones & small toys.

Eric roars with triumph!

This cache was cleverly hidden, in plain sight.

Other caches are planted in
the brush that surrounds the
soccer fields.
Sometimes, the description  of a cache provides clues for the searchers.

John found this cache under
the split rail fencing,
just as described in its listing.

The log is stored in a
Ziploc bag in this
larger box.

I found this cache under
an overhanging rock.

Eric signs the log.

Carol starts to make
her way back to the
soccer field.

This cache, covered with
camouflage duct tape,  was
hidden behind smaller
stones, beneath this boulder.

Inspecting the stash.

Shadows hide this cache
beneath the fallen log.

John leaves an orange car
for others to find, &
move to another cache.

Navigating to the GPS coordinates is just the start of the search for each cache.  The clues given by the person who planted a stash can be obvious, or vague.  I was amazed by the sense of triumph I felt each time we found a cache.  Geocaching is fun!
