The cannon was hit by Confederate fire during the artillery duel that preceded Pickett's Charge on July 4, 1863, and the muzzle was damaged. The crew tried to reload the cannon after it was damaged. The cannonball became lodged in the muzzle and could not be removed.

The last stop on the tour is the State of Rhode Island Colonial Charter Room.
This safe holds a hand written
copy of the Colonial Charter
for Rhode Island granted by
King Charles II in 1663.
The original is being
preserved,
An image of King Charles II
serves as his signature.
The Royal Seal, made of wax, fell apart during the intervening years, The pieces were carefully collected and are stored in the Rhode Island State Archives.

We enjoyed our 37th state capitol. Rhode Island's State House is beautiful and represents the state's 350 year history as a British Colony and its statehood.
