Houses of Worship in Historic Savannah, Georgia

First African Baptist Church
was organized in 1773.

This church was built, in
part, by slaves in 1859.

Escaped slaves hid in the
church as they waited to
continue north along the
Underground Railroad.

was founded in 1733.

Like minded people found places to worship in Savannah.

Lutheran Church of the
Ascension was founded
in 1741.

The steeples of  the Cathedral
be seen from across the
historic district.

in the late 1700s.

Jews were forbidden from colonizing in Georgia.  A group of 42 arrived in Savannah in 1733 and were welcomed by General James E. Oglethorpe.  Dr. Samuel Nunes' skills were needed to treat the Yellow Fever patients in the Savannah area.

A group of wealthy New England businessmen arrived in Savannah in the 1820s to work in the cotton trade.  They did not find a church that they felt comfortable worshiping in and formed the Savannah Unitarian Society.  The church's membership grew and ebbed over the years, as worshipers met in various buildings around the city.

Saint John's Episcopal
Church was founded
in 1841.

The congregations n this section of Savannah have been worshiping since the city's founding in 1733. Many of the churches I photographed are "newer" buildings.
