Walking Around Emporia, Virginia

After Eric and I finished our chores, we took our Jeep north to Emporia for a walk around town.

The city's water tower looms
above the downtown area.

Logan's Diner

I like the 1950s color
scheme.

This shop has the cutest
awning!

The Bank by Kahill's

National Bank.

This stately home is located
in the middle of downtown.

A mural of the main

Railroad tracks cross through
town one block from

On December 7, 1864 the Union Army descended on Hicksord, now Emporia to destroy the railroad line that supplied the Confederate Army in Petersburg.  On December 9, Union troops plundered the area and destroyed sixteen miles of railroad track as they retreated to Petersburg.  Because the Union soldiers were said to been drinking Apple Whiskey, locally known as Applejack, while raiding the area, this conflict became known as the Apple Jack Raid.
