Taking the George Black Ferry Into Dawson City, Yukon Territory

The George Black Ferry is free.  It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, when the Yukon River is free of ice.

A closer view of
Dawson City.

The ferry landing on the
Dawson City side of
the river.

The radio station lists the times
when the ferry is out of service
for refueling & maintenance.

Eric pulls into the
RV lane.

People tired of overcrowding in
Dawson City moved across the
river to West Dawson in 1899.

A ferry guided by a cable linked
the two communities together
in 1902.

We are loaded onto
the ferry.

It's close quarters for the man
directing the cars, trucks &
RVs onto the ferry.

Everyone rides in their vehicles
with the engine off & the
 emergency brake engaged.

We have landed on the eastern
shore of the Yukon River.

Fellow riders disembark.

Eric drives slowly down
the ramp to shore.

Our next stop is the
where we have reservations
for a week.
