Our Visit to Mount Saint Helens, Washington

Our first glimpse of

Known as "Louala-Clough," or smoking mountain by Native Americans, Mount Saint Helens showed signs of an upcoming eruption in 1978.  The watching and waiting ended on May 18, 1980 at 8:32 am.

We enter the blast zone,
which covered 230
square miles.

Almost 150,000 square miles of privately owned, state and federal forests were destroyed.

We stop at the Forest

Unfortunately, the exhibits are
closed during the off season.

We continue up the road to
the Mount Saint Helens
 National  Volcanic Monument,
 created in 1982.

With dedicated RV
parking spots

The eruption on May 18, 1980
blew off over 1,300 feet off
 the volcano's dome.

The crater measures one mile wide, two miles long and 2,200 feet deep. The debris, gases and fires from the eruption killed 57 people and over seven thousand animals.
